Celebrated pianist, conductor, and scholar Jeffrey Kahane is acclaimed for his imagination and artistry, leading orchestras worldwide, championing new works, and inspiring audiences with programs spanning classical, contemporary, and cross-disciplinary collaborations.
Celebrated for his “imagination, devotion and supreme musicianship” (Los Angeles Times), pianist, conductor, and scholar Jeffrey Kahane is now in the fifth decade of a remarkable career. His highlights span concertos with the New York Philharmonic and San Francisco Symphony, recitals with Yo-Yo Ma and Joshua Bell, European tours conducting the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, and collaborations with ensembles including the Emerson, Dover, and Calidore Quartets. He currently serves as Music Director of the San Antonio Philharmonic and has been Music Director of the Sarasota Music Festival since 2016.
Recent seasons have included concerto appearances with the Oregon Symphony, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and The Knights at Carnegie Hall; collaborations with his son, composer Gabriel Kahane; and guest conducting the Colorado Symphony. In his inaugural season with the San Antonio Philharmonic, Kahane led performances with artists including Jon Kimura Parker, Natasha Paremski, and Zlatomir Fung, and presented Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 in the orchestra’s new home at the Scottish Rite Auditorium.
Kahane served two decades as Music Director of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, where he created the popular “Discover” series and founded Sound Investment, a commissioning club supporting new works. He has premiered concertos by Kevin Puts, Andrew Norman, and Gabriel Kahane, with the latter’s Heirloom recorded for release on Nonesuch Records in 2025.
The grand prize winner and Gold Medalist of the Arthur Rubinstein International Competition, Kahane is equally committed to education, teaching piano and chamber music at USC’s Thornton School of Music, where he also bridges music and literature through interdisciplinary courses.
Beyond the concert hall, Kahane is an avid reader, linguist, hiker, and cook. He and his wife Martha delight in their two children—Gabriel and Annie—and their grandchildren, Rosie and Agnes.
