Mills is also widely recognized for his commitment to contemporary music and creative collaboration. His recordings of works by Arnold Schoenberg earned Grammy nominations, and his extensive discography spans labels including NAXOS, AVIE, Centaur, Tzadik, and Verve. As a composer and improviser, he has received commissions from leading presenters and released the critically acclaimed recording Endangered Quartet: Heart in 2020.

A graduate of The Juilliard School, where he studied with Dorothy DeLay, Robert Mann, Itzhak Perlman, and Naoko Tanaka, Mills serves on the faculties of Longy School of Music of Bard College and Brooklyn College.
