Strings

Tessa-Lark

Violist Matthew Lipman brings rich tone, expressive depth, and bold creativity to global stages, performing with top orchestras, commissioning new works, and championing the viola’s place in today’s classical landscape.

Praised by The New York Times for his “rich tone and elegant phrasing,” violist Matthew Lipman is one of the most sought-after musicians of his generation, appearing as soloist and chamber artist with leading orchestras and festivals worldwide.

Recent debuts include the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at Ravinia, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, and the American Symphony Orchestra. He’s also appeared with the Minnesota Orchestra, Munich Symphony, and at major venues such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Wigmore Hall, and the Vienna Musikverein.

A passionate collaborator, Lipman has performed with Anne-Sophie Mutter, Jeremy Denk, and Stella Chen, and is a regular with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. He co-created Nightwanderer, an interactive recital with Denk, and appeared on PBS’s Now Hear This performing Schubert. His creative projects include premieres by Clarice Assad and a forthcoming work by Joel Thompson with mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton, to debut at Lincoln Center and the Kennedy Center.

Lipman’s debut album Ascent was praised by The Strad as “most impressive,” and his discography includes releases on Cedille, Sony Classical, Deutsche Grammophon, and Avie Records. He was featured on a chart-topping recording of Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante conducted by Sir Neville Marriner.

A recipient of the Avery Fisher Career Grant, Lipman studied at Juilliard under Heidi Castleman and at Kronberg Academy with Tabea Zimmermann. He now teaches at Stony Brook University and performs on a 2021 viola made for him by Samuel Zygmuntowicz.

He is an alum of the Bowers Program, a frequent guest at Marlboro, Ravinia, Menlo, and Kronberg, and has collaborated with artists such as Itzhak Perlman, Tabea Zimmermann, Mitsuko Uchida, and the Dover Quartet.

A Chicago native, Lipman is also a fan of donuts, drawing floor plans, and tennis.
