Principal Bass of the New York Philharmonic, Timothy Cobb is a globally celebrated performer and educator, known for his orchestral leadership, chamber artistry, and commitment to musical diplomacy and education.

Timothy Cobb joined the New York Philharmonic as Principal Bass in 2014, following his tenure as principal bass of The Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. An acclaimed chamber musician, he has appeared at festivals worldwide, including Marlboro Music and serves on the faculty of the Sarasota Music Festival. Cobb has served as principal bass of World Orchestra for Peace, an international ensemble promoting global harmony. Through this affiliation, he was named a UNESCO Artist for Peace.

 

In a unique artistic collaboration, Cobb recorded a solo bass soundtrack for actor Stephen Lang’s animated short film The Wheatfield, about the Battle of Gettysburg. The duo was invited to perform at the 150th anniversary of the battle and plans to collaborate on future projects. An influential educator, Cobb chairs the bass department at The Juilliard School and serves on the faculties of the Manhattan School of Music, Rutgers University, and Purchase College. He is also a distinguished visiting professor at Lynn University in Florida.

 

Originally from Albany, New York, Cobb graduated from the Curtis Institute of Music, studying with Roger Scott. While at Curtis, he performed as a substitute with The Philadelphia Orchestra and joined the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under Sir Georg Solti during his senior year. His recordings include all Metropolitan Opera releases between 1986 – 2014 and a Naxos album of Bottesini’s duo bass music with Thomas Martin. Cobb is renowned not only for his orchestral and solo performances but also for his dedication to mentoring the next generation of bassists and advancing the role of music in global cultural exchange.
